Sportster Through the Years: A Look Back Before the Big Reveal
11 July 2021

On Wednesday morning (at 3.00am) we can see the live worldwide release of a new model Harley-Davidson!
But today, for a Sunday look around, here are a few pics of the longest-running Harley platform ever - the Sportster. There are still brand new 2021 models available...as always. But 2021 is the last ever production run of these truly iconic motorcycles.
In the pics you'll find just a few of the vast variety of Sportster models released in the 64 year lifespan, including the first ever Sportster from 1957 (first image). It featured a 55-cube (900cc) overhead valve engine with four cams and unit construction, ie the gearbox is not a separate part, but inside the crankcases.

It was built to counter the then-strong competition and sales of British bikes from Triumph, Norton, etc. We think that with a run of 64 years, the Sporty proved to be a success!
In the pics are a 1972 Ironhead, when the displacment was increased to 1000cc, and a 1986 1000cc which was the first year using the Evolution XL engine. In 1988, the size was increased to 1200cc, and a the 883cc joined the range too.
Other Sportster models are the 1998 1200S with hot cams and twin-plug heads, a Roadster from 2004 which introduced an all-new frame, and newer models starting with the Nightster from 2007, XR1200 from 2009, 48 from 2010, the 72 from 2013, the 1200T (Tourer) from 2015, and from right now in 2021, the Iron 883.

And all those models show one consistent thing: the unique and beautifully balanced Sportster profile.
But the future is calling, excitement is calling, and we're not going to miss it! You too? See the all-new model online release on Wednesday!
